M42 junction 6 update: weekend road closure

Advance notice of road closure:
M42 central reservation hardening

As part of our work to upgrade the M42 at junction 6, we’re creating a new junction (5a) and installing a new dual carriageway between this junction and Clock Interchange.

To create the new M42 junction 5a we’ll need to install 2 new bridges across the M42. In preparation for this we need to harden the central reservation around the area of the new junction before the structures are moved into place later this year.

To complete this hardening work safely, we’ll work in the following phases:

  • The M42 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junction 6 (National Exhibition Centre) and 5 (Solihull) from 22:00 on Friday 10 June to 05:00 on Monday 13 June.
  • During the daytime, two lanes will be open on the southbound side of the carriageway from 05:00 to 22:00.
  • The northbound carriageway will also be reduced to two lanes from 22:00 on Friday 10 June to 06:00 on Monday 13 June but will continue to remain open throughout the weekend.

When the road is closed we’ll put in place a clearly signed diversion route as shown on the map below. We expect these lane closures to cause delays for motorists travelling along the M42. Please plan ahead and allow additional time for your journeys. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience you may experience during our upcoming work.
